What is the purpose of a track bar on LEAF SPRING 99-04 Super Duty 4X4s?

Track bars are normally associated with coil spring suspensions to locate the axle side to side, these trucks use 3" leaf springs up front. Logically thinking, the track bar would bind the leaf springs near total extension/compression.

I have an '03 PSD. From what I've read on various forums, the only bad thing experienced with removing the track bar is occasional bump steer. The track bar keeps the axle centered, and leaf spring bushings from loading up when turning and to a lesser degree helps during sudden stops and accelaration, especially when towing.

I dunno. From the stand point of a sometimes over analytical mechanical engineer, I don't like the idea of removing it. Its a heavy truck that you are relying on the leaf spring bushings to support body roll (to a small extent, mostly the sway bar handles this), body shift and a bunch of other dynamics that the track bar secures. For one, you add a bending moment to the leaf spring bolts that the track bar would remove.

Even on my lifted rock crawler jeep, I removed the sway bar, but left the track bar on. Last thing I need is for the axle to move sideways and bind up my leaf springs when I least want it too.

I'm not sure myself, the only thing I can think of is balancing out the ride/handling quality.
