What could cause airbag light to stay on?

We have a 96 van with 95,000 and as soon as we start the engine the airbag light comes on and stays on til we shut the vehicle down.

What could cause this? Is there some sort of sensor that comes on when the airbag is no longer any good?

Thanks

When the airbag warning light is on the the is a code stored in the airbag control module. What you need is to do is take it to a repair shop that can retrieve the code. They will plug a diagnostic tool into the connector under the drivers side of the dash. The code that is stored will give you a direction to go in whether it be a sensor or control module problem...etc.Having worked at a chrysler dealer for 4 years the most common problem was a code for drivers squib circuit open or short to ground.this means there is a wiring problem between the control module and the drivers airbag on the steering wheel.Pretty much 100% of the time it was the clockspring. The clockspring is a device that allows the wiring to pass from the steering column to the steering wheel and still allow the wheel to turn. The constant turning of the wheel after so long will wear on this part of the circuit. Can't say for sure this is your problem, but get it checked out asap.If it is the problem, and your in an accident, the bag will not deploy since the signal from the airbag control module will not reach the airbag

On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. These systems can only be diagnosed using a scanner designed for the airbag system. The scanners at Auto Zone or the ones that sell for @ $50 will not access the airbag system, only the engine systems (check engine light).

Check out these websites for more info on your airbag system.

it could be an impact sensor, the module, any of the airbags, the wiring, the clockspring, seatbelt retractors or buckles. do not try to dissaseble anything yourself. the airbags are dangerous-even a static spark can fire one off. best thing to do would be to go to a dealer. if you have a minivan your clockspring most likely has a lifetime warranty.

Well you could take the air bag out and replace it.. Or dismantle the whole thing but because it doesnt like explode on you or anything lol.. Check for loose wires and anything else you can find and im sure it will work.. You just gotta go at it by the time you wait for someone to answer your Q you could have it done man Good Luck.. should be that hard

You possibly have a bad sensor or blown fuse, don't go and take apart the airbag. Let a experienced mechanic do that. Take it to one and let them tell you whats wrong.

There's many things it could be depending on what kind of dodge it is. I've got a '97 dodge caravan that had the same problem, and it was a little gold colored clip inside the steering wheel that had broken. Hope this helps, good luck.
