Was the Iraq war inevitable whether Bush was elected or not?

I remember arguing in 2000, that if Al Gore was elected we would go to war with Iraq, becuase of his stance on pulling our economies out of the Middle East. Well, Bush got elected, he went ahead and decided to diversify are oil, e.g. Alaska, and we went to war. Obviously I was a little naive at the time. But it makes me wonder if we were talking about war with Iraq if Al Gore was the president, was it inevitable? Remember it was those we voted into office, Democrats and Republicans that voted and approved a military operation in Iraq, ahem, Hillary Rodham Clinton a lead supporter of the move, cough.

Yes, but the outcome would definately have been different. Gore would have cut and run MONTHS before we captured the jerk.

specific, 9/11 had easily no longer something to do with the invasion of Iraq. The invasion replaced into using Saddam no longer following the UN sanctions positioned on him greater desirable than 10 years in the past. The Iraq war could have ultimately exceeded off with or without 9/11 taking place. whether 9/11 could have in all probability accelerated the Iraqi concern using fact the prospect of Saddam won't have been tolerated anymore.

No. Even Bush Sr. would not have gone into Iraq - this is why he didn't take out Saddam in the first place. I dont think Gore would have gone into Iraq - Afghanistan maybe, Iraq no. But then again Gore probably would have met with counter terrorism advisors BEFORE 9/11 and may have prevented it from happening to begin with (here comes the parade of thumbs downs).

Check out this quote from Bush Sr. on why he didn't go into Iraq:

Read that US government had been planning or trying to get control of oil in Iraq for about 80 years. A long-term foreign policy goal.

No, I don't see Gore following through with that. I see years of pointless, toothless threats from the UN; more under-the-table oil deals with members of the UN Security council to ensure Saddam's impunity; continued WMD developments from not only Iraq, but Iran and N. Korea.

I don't think we would have gone to war...this is Daddy's Bush's baby, the greeed for this oil started way back when he was in office and I feel that Clinton, Gore, Kerry, etc. would have been against going to war. I feel they are way more intelligent and would have been able to solve this problem by using their brains to come up with as many solutions as possible before going to war.....plus I also think that if we still went to war it would have ended by now....

Any fool could see Hussein was bluffing. That's why President Bush had to LIE about the evidence ("if you knew what we know, but we can't reveal our source"*) so our nation would rush irresponsibly into war.

This war was not inevitable. Any OTHER President than George Walker Bush would have been better for our country and the world.

I don't think anyone else would have invaded Iraq, especially with the on-going campaign in Afghanistan. In fact, limited incursion along the Pakistani border would have been more in order than attacking Iraq.

HA! Well, according to Karl Rove, yes.

He blames us going to war with Iraq on the Democrats....

turns out Bush Sr was right when he was talking about why he didnt invade Iraq. Saddam, as much of an assh0le as he was, kept the place in line
