Expect to spend a few minutes filling out information when you first turn it on... a USB keyboard makes it MUCH easier. I can't stress this enough - get a USB keyboard for this.
Do you have a wifi network in your home? If you do, the PS3 can connect to it. If the PS3 connects to the internet, it will ask you to stop what you are doing to download the latest firmware... put that off until you go to bed. If you accidently tell it to update, it will be downloading and installing when you want to be playing. You can easily cancel it after you start it...
If you're hooked up to the internet, go to the "Sony store" in the menu and download some movie trailers and demo games. They are free and they can be downloaded in the background while you play your new games. The store is a little slow, but not too bad.
I don't know what kind of screen you've got, but the PS3 starts out in low resolution to be compatible with standard def TV... use HDMI or component cables to run HD resolution (the video settings in the menu should be set to the highest resolution that your TV accepts).
So, now come the games - WOW! They look great. There's so much more detail than in a PS2 game (higher resolution and more graphics processing). The PS3 is the most exciting gaming system since the original Nintendo.

You will have to go through the initial setup of the machine, user name, and where you're located, etc, etc, etc... Then once that's done, then you'll need to go online and create a PSN account, once you've done that, you're ready to go online, just keep in mind that the PSN account DOES NOT COST YOU ANYTHING.
Once you're done with that head to the Playstation Store, and start downloading some demos to your heart's content.
Couple of games that you need to check out, if you're an online gamer, Warhawk can't be missed, also if you're a single player gamer, then Uncharted can't be missed.

I know how it feels man, i felt the exact same way before i got mine, yes you do have to do a lot of things before you can actually play but once u do play it's awesome. i do not regret buying it at all, but the games for it arn't all that great yet, but they just started getting better. But starting next year the games r gonna be bad ***. I know this because i saw a list of upcoming games.

Utter dissapointment and regret of not getting a 360. hahaha.. I'm just kidding...well kinda. The PS3 just hasn't shown me anything amazing the 3 to 4 times I've played it. And I honestly don't know a title that has specifically been PS3 only that could really complete with the leading titles for Xbox... I'd say get a 360 while you still can. I have two friends who have a PS3 and a 360 and I'm not lying to you when I say both of their PS3's collect dust.

It looks like you've been brain-washed by Sony and there loyal fanboys. What will you expect when you play the PS3? Nothing, except play crappy games.
