There are many types of mallets that can be used for the xylophone and these are not limited to yarn.

Your choice of mallet depends on a number of factors which include the ensemble (orchestra, chamber group, solo recital), the location of the performance (small recital hall, large orchestra hall), the music you will be playing, etc.

In an orchestral setting, the xylophone is usually played with mallets made of plastic, however they can also be rubber, cord wound, wood, or a combination of these materials. A yarn mallet will provide you with a mellow sound with more low frequencies that is similar to the sound of the marimba; another mallet percussion instrument that has a lower range and is usually played with softer mallets than the xylophone.

If you are looking for a professional level product, I suggest you try mallets made by Freer, Mike Balter, Malletech, Encore, and Innovative. In my opinion, the Freer K5 mallets have a nice light feel and don't create the typical brittle sound that associated with the xylophone. A good soft mallet for the xylophone would be a rubber mallet such as the Freer K3 or K4. Encore makes excellent rubber mallets, but be careful not to choose too soft of a mallet or the instrument won't produce enough volume.

My opinion is that rubber could create the main suitable tone on timber. Use skinny wood dowels for handles and great glue them into small rubber balls. The dowels you will detect at a house progression keep. discover some small sturdy rubber toy balls in a toy area and drill them out to insert the dowels.
