A sole proprietorship is a company made up of one person. Examples would be a housekeeper, a plumber or dog groomer. Their personal finances and the finances of the business can both be attached in the event of a law suit.
A partnership would be two or more individuals who decide to share the risk and rewards of the business. Partners may run a restaurant, and accounting firm, or a beauty salon.
Corporations are like individuals in the eyes of the law. They are a legal entity separate from the people who operate it. For example, the plumber who was a sole proprietor may choose to incorporate his business - making his business a separate entity from him. He is a paid employee of the corporation. Corporations have all the same rights as an individual in the eyes of the law. If the corporation fails, it is the corporate assets that are lost, not the assets of the employees - even the individuals who may have created the corporation.
The biggest difference between these three is the level of individual financial risk involved.
