Paint glazing? Do you have to use the base paint for the mix, or can you just use the glaze itself?

It is recommended to use eggshell paint as the base, and then to use 2 or more colors that compliment as the glaze. I would do it properly instead of trying to save money on the paint if you want to be satisfied with the end result. It's always better to do it right the first time, when it comes to painting anything, than to have to go back and re-do it because it doesn't look like you thought it would, and you wasted your time and your paint.! I am a house painter, muralist, faux finish professional and can't tell you how many people call me and want me to come and fix what they messed up. Happy Painting

As a 37 yearr experienced painter ..we always made ours..they didn't have a glazing in a can like now, and pickling the same... We always painted our base paint...back then an oil based..there wasn't any latex...then reduced more oil base a different tone/color after the base dried and brushed it on at random..then wiped down with sponges/rags as we wanted..same as putties and stains..we didn't buy premixed color putty..we mixed white putty with colorant, then dried it up some with "whiting" ..however in the latex world we did the same thing..paint the base color with a latex paint..prefererably at least a satin finish..then when COMPLETELY DRIED.. we take an oil based paint for the glazing and reduce it at least 50% ..more depending on the tone and depth you want..and brushed on at random..then wiped down to glaze with a sponge/rag..depending on what effect you want...The REAL painters are a dying art..they wouldn't have a clue how to mix thier own stains/paints/putties...I started painting at the age of 13 helping my uncles(all 5 painters) and now I'm 52..to this day..I still will not buy pre packaged picklings or glazings....You pay obnoxious costs for a gallon of them when you can make your own for half the cost...

the base paint is there to insure an even under color so the glaze can look smooth and neat

you do not have to use it

as with any paint process you wont know what you like for sure till you play with different styles and techniques

The glaze dries clear, so you do need some pigment for it to do anything.
