What does this old New York proverb mean???????

A nickel will get you on the subway, but garlic will get you a seat.

    it means you have bad breath so everyone around you will move and give you their seat to get away from you.

    Obviously, a Subway ride was a 'nickle' back then. "Garlic will get you a seat"....If you eat garlic or rub it on you, the eating will cause 'bad breath' and the smell from rubbing it on you (not a GREAT idea) 'both ways' is offensive to many people..... many will get up to move and 'there you are, you have a seat'
