The first commandment....?

The first commandmant was thou shalt have no other god before me. If there is only one god, then why does this imply that there are other gods? Would it have been better to say: Thou shalt have no other false gods before me?

Update:

the second commandment deals with false idols...talkin bout the first.

One of the statements related to the first commandment is:

    "I am a jealous god."

And the first commandment as I learned it:

"I am the Lord, thy god. Thou shalt have no other gods before me."

Because the very name word in the bible "Elohim", referring to deity, is a plural word (the singular of which is El, as in Micha-el, Gabri-el, Rapha-el, Ishma-el, Emmanu-el, Samu-el, Dani-el), this statement only makes sense. The god of Moses is the god of the Israelites (and there's another one, Isra-el). That deity is a tribal god, specific to a particular people.

Contemporary teachings in any culture of the time (2,000 to 4,000 years ago) were that each tribe or village or town or clan had its own particular deity or deities. Egyptians, Celts, Greeks, Scotti, Romans, Picts, Gauls, Visigoths, Angles, Suomi, Magyars...you name it.

Because there were other gods. Many of them. They were no less true or false then the one in the bible. That one was the one of the Jews. Funny how the Christians took over on that one and then created yet another. Hmmmmm

I think that back when the commandments were written it was understood that any other gods were false, it was just common sense and intelligence for them.

If it said, no other false idols, then that would imply that he was false. Get it?
