2002 Grand Cherokee 6 cyl. Question about a recent and consistent check engine light coming on.?
The car runs great. No problems whatsoever, but the engine light came on about a week or so ago, and does not shut off. Is this some sort of automatic reminder to have some sort of service performed ? The car has just reached 75,000 miles. Chrysler/Jeep techies, come to my rescue !

The "check engine" light means an emission control problem.....not an "engine" problem...
Until you check the codes you never know what the F is wrong.
It's not the "oil" or Temp" light.
The check engine light can be anything between a loose gas cap to an oxygen sensor to a leaky vacuum line.

When the check engine light comes on and stays it is storing a code. You can take to some part stores but I found their computers don't always read codes properly bite the bullet and take it to a Jeep dealer if it is emissions it might be covered under warranty.Oxygen sensors seem to be the main source the majority of the time, also watch what kind of gas you are using some of this 10% ethonal gas with higher octane reading will sometimes set off the light use some Lucas fuel treatment every third tank to eliminate future problems.Good luck.

You have found out why it is not a good idea to buy an auction vehicle...start with the least expensive repair (a new fuel cap) and go from there to the next least expensive item; you will probably need to keep going back to autozone to have them clear the code, then wait a day or so to see if the code /light reappears PS while at autozone, have them show you each part that shows as needing replacement

On 2001 and newer Jeeps/Chryslers, get in the car, close the door firmly, and set the odometer to read total miles.
Then turn your key to the on position (not START, but just so the idiot lights come on), then off, then on, off, and on (leave it in this position). You should see an alpha-numeric code displayed in the odo display if something is wrong.
Jot the code down, and either ask your dealer's service dept what it means, or see if Allpar.com lists it. I have had good luck asking the dealer in similar circumstances.
This will NOT work on 2000 and older Jeeps and Chryslers, except for if you go back to the mid '90's Chryslers and before- then it does work going back at least to the mid 80's.
So....ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON
If your doors are open, this will not work, because your odo display will instead tell you that your door is ajar.

Have you had it hooked to a computer which will tell you what the code is? When the check engine light is on there has to be a problem somewhere. Mine came on one time when the gas cap was not closed properly. Not sure if you have a Pep Boys but they will connect it and tell you wha the code means.

Seems no problem.Check engine light coming on only when hard trouble code set, means yes there is the problem.Read the code and come back here to have idea what is that code means.Good luck.

I would take it to a parts store and borrow the scanner to see what code is in there, whenever your vehicle gets a warning light on it means the computer is probably operating on a secondary operating program as it needs all the sensors to operate properly, and in most cases it will use more fuel.Good luck to you in figuring it out.
