Renting apartments in New York?

I will be working in New York next year for 18months and am looking into areas to rent an apartment. My budget is about £1200 / $2400 per month. What areas should I be looking at for this sort of budget.

some people on here dont know what they are talking about. To limit your search to "below 110th street or 92nd street" is ridiculous.

You can get more bang for your buck looking in upper Manhattan also. Neighborhoods such as Morningside Heights (Columbia University area), Harlem (Bill Clinton seems to be ok with his office there), Washington Heights (Columbia/Cornell Presbyterian Hospital Campus) and many more in northern Manhattan have beautiful large spacious apartments. The neighborhoods have all been and still are under renovation and much cheaper than paying for the below 110th street address.

Upper Manhattan is no longer segregated it was in the past. It has experienced a social and economic renaissance, as well as rapid gentrification since the late 90's. For 2,400 bucks a month, you can have a studio or small one-bedroom downtown (the size of a shoebox, but you have a great address) or a large spacious apartment with 1-2 bedrooms uptown. So be open and investigate all options.

Here is a map of the Manhattan neighborhoods.

    To Goodache:

I wouldnt be getting off "any" train and walking anywhere at 3am in the morning. At that hour, I would hope you would be in a cab and dropped off at your door.

You will need to do some looking, but you will find something.

See this link to Craigslist - http://newyork.craigslist.org/aap/

As a rule of thumb, stay below 92nd St on the East side and below 110 th st on the West side - In Manhattan

There are some really nice neighborhoods a couple of stops on the train from Manhattan in Brooklyn. Queens and New Jersey, Park Slope, Carrol Gardens, Astoria, Hoboken, etc,

If you find a place outside of these suggestions post it on this board, we'll fill you in.

By the way, you will get the one liner "No Way" remarks here, ignore them. Some of them are kids others may not even live in the city,

Hit a sour note with Deb here:

OK. I will admit that over the years there is a vast improvement in the neighborhoods above my generic rule. The area immediately around Columbia is a shinning star there.

However, the "acid test is - would you get off the 1 train stop after Columbia (125th) and caually walk home on the side streets at 3AM - By yourself. The majority of areas below my "rules of Thumb" pass this test.

    Nice to meet you Deb

My 3AM days are very rare these days. However I really appreciate your looking out for my well being.

Got to run - I coach a bunch of 10 year olds playing Basketball and it's game day!

    To Native New Yorker

I have three scars, two, times stabbed and shot in the leg while in the area between 125 st and145th street . I did my homework.

Are you going to suggest that a visitor to NYC go through the crap I did in this neighborhood!

I grew up tough ,in bad area here in NYC. That is the only reason I am alive. after the attacks I had in this area. I won three out of five muggings in Moringside Heights, West Harlem, but almost died doing it.

Should I suggest a tourist live here!

In Manhattan, $2400 will get you a studio. In Queens or Brooklyn, it can get you something much bigger.

$2400 will get you a 1 bedroom in Manhattans marginal neighborhoods.

    Will you need a car?

You could get something nice in Riverdale (Bronx)
