How come when you go to a higher altitude it gets colder?

Isn't it supposed to be hotter cause it's closer to the sun? And isn't the lowest point supposed to be cold cause it's farther away from the sun???????

as convection lifts the warm air higher it expands and cool

The farther down you go where light can reach, the easier it is for the atmosphere to contain the energy from light. Vise versa for the farther up you go.

As you go higher, the air becomes thinner. The thinner air can't hold heat.

the sunshine passes though the gaseous atmosphere and heats the earths surface. the surface radiates heat that it has absorbed. the farther you get from the radiated heat the colder it gets.

Gravity doesn't have so much effect up there, so it doesn't hold the air in as well, and if there is less air particles, then there is less to hold the heat.

Really, with how far the heat has come so far, it really doesn't matter that much how far down you are in that respect.

The heat you feel is the heat reflected off of earth (and objects on earth), thus the further up up and away the less heat you feel
