sick 13 month old...?
my son is 13 months old and he has had a stomache bug since yesterday. he had a fever, but it's gone now, but he keeps throwing up. everytime i give him a drink he throws it up in a few minutes. i'm afraid he's going to get dehydrated. i have called my dr. but since his fever wasn't bad and he had had this for less then 24 hours, she said to just keep an eye on him and make sure he drinks liquids. how do i tell if he is dehydrated? and is it better to give him pedialyte instead of just watered down juice?

Hydration is the key
-small sips of water or pedialyte every 30 minutes while awake. You can use a teaspoon as a guide. He may still it up,. but he will be getting some hydration.
-Once he goes a few hours without vomiting, you can introduce very bland foods in tiny amounts. Maybe a few bites of a saline cracker every hour.
If you suspect dehydration, take him to the ER right away. Be sure to watch for wet diapers. If he goes all day with no wet diaper, I'd take him in. Also, if his lips are dry, he cries but has no tears or the inside of his mouth is dry, he is dehydrated and should be seen.
Stomach bugs can last a few hours or as long as three days. If it's going longer than that, I'd take him in to be sure he is still well hydrated.
Good luck! You're doing the right things!

Seriously, you should call a chiropractor. If the cold is something that needs a pediatrician, the chiropractor will tell you that. If not, it's amazing what a chiropractic adjustment can do for an illness. It sounds kind of crazy, but if the spine is in proper alignment, the immune system is working better. I didn't believe it until I brought my son. He was 12 months old and was sick for 3 months straight. He had a fever every day, sometimes mild, sometimes high, he was vomitting almost every day, runny nose, congestion, and the occasional convulsion. We went to all sorts of doctors who couldn't figure out why he wasn't recovering from his cold and we tried all sorts of medications, non of which worked. My mother kept pushing me to take him to the chiropractor, I thought she was crazy, but did it finally. After the first visit, he was feeling much better, second visit 3 days later, the cold was gone. Now he goes twice a month just because and he has been sick once, it was brief, and mild. He's 25 months old. Try it, you'll be amazed. The worst that can happen is you're out 30-40 dollars, and that's only if your insurance doesn't cover it (mine does). Keep nursing him as much as he wants. As others have said, breast milk is loaded with antibodies and is not going to upset his stomach any more than it is, only soothe it.

My doctor used to say you can tell if a baby is dehydrated by the head. If there is a dip in the soft spot on the babies head they are dehydrated. Dioralite is brilliant for dehydration. It gives the baby all the sugars it needs to keep hydrated. And if the baby is sick the body would have alreay obsorbed the goodness from the drink. Little and often I would say.

just ensure he is is having at least 3 wet nappies a day. don't give him juice, only offer him water or gastrolyte, or the pedialyte (which i'm assuming is the same thing). if he is dehydrated, he will become very listless. only offer small amounts of liquid at a time. your doctor is right, just keep a check on him and ensure he is well hydrated

yes pedialyte is great well all but the taste. to tell id he is dehydrated when he cries there is no tears. no wet diapers. and if his mouth is dry these are all signs of dehydration. What ever he throws up you should try to get that much in him. but not all at once
