What are the rules and restrictions on importing clothes into Australia?
Looking to set my girlfriend up with running a small importing business where she goes overseas purchases clothing items and sells them here in Australia.
I was wondering if anyone knew, or can point me in the right direction, of current laws / restrictions associated with doing this. I know we wouldn't be charged GST etc, for anything less than 50k per year with an ABN. However, when carrying purchased items through customs is there a tax for a certain amount? What kind of taxes would be faced on large orders? Small orders (ie: within a suitcase carried)?
Best regards,
Tom

Err, can not be much of a business if you are only going to bring stock in by suitcase.
1)You really need to ask customs. You could try searching the customs site. The problem is there may be quarantine requirements like fumigation, etc .
2) You will be liable for import duty, if it exists and you really need to check this out. We once had a large box of promo t-shirts sent to us and the assessed duty was more than having the complete item made in australia.
The most practical method to me seems to be to have someone POST you item. Not fed ex, or anything like that. Aust Post doesn't collect duty under a certain value.
