Build a cloud chamber to detect cosmic rays. It's fairly simple and inexpensive. And the students will probably enjoy seeing the variety of particles that sail though our region of space on a routine basis. And what these very solid objects are capable of penetrating. Sub-atomic bullets are what they'll understand radiation to be. You may want to find better sites to work with. But these should get you started.

NASA sponsors a program for eactly the purpose you mention.
It is called Sun-Earth Day. They will furnish you a complete project guide which has a number of projects/experiments each year. You can choose to participate nationwide, or simply use the projects on a local level in your school.
There are several levels of expertise at which you can choose to participate. Check it out at "sunearthday.nasa.gov" .
You'll find instructions there on obtaining the kit etc.
I use it for junior projects in conjunction with our Astronomy club's young people projects.
This past year one of the projects was to track a solar storm.
Hope this is what you are looking for.

Explain the difference between astronomy and astrology and why astrology is such crap. All you need is a planisphere and a Stardial. The StarDial basically just shows the Ecliptic constellations and when the Sun is "in front" or South of them.
www.stardial.us webpage is in six languages
You could purchase extra StarDials and give them to the students after your presentation.
Source(s): eBay keyword to purchase: StarDial - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

The comet impact experiment. Terraforming Mars. Dark Matter. The Big Bang. The new idea for a Moon Base thats been floating around. That the Voyager probes are hitting the edge of the solar system.
