Sharing files and sharing a printer on a wired/wireless network?

I have had several people answer similar questions to this, but not to the degree that they have helped!! I need some pretty basic step by step, NO ASSUMPTIONS, guidelines and steps to get this thing to work.

Please, if you can, do not answer with genralities, or opinions. I need help form those with learned knowledge, whether it be learned a classrom or by actaul experience!! Thanks!

I have a wireless router, and have a network established between my wired PC and my wireless laptop...the internet works on both. But, I have had no luck sharing files, or sharing my printer, which is connected to the PC!! Several people have pointed out the Microsoft link that shows one how to establish a 'simple file sharing' network...plenty of people!!! The problem is that when it comes to the point of clicking the box for 'simple file sharing'...that box, nor the line 'simple file sharing' are there.

Please help this computer networking idiot!!!

Update:

I am running XP home on both machines

What OS are you using? I might be wrong here, but I don't think that box would be there if you are using XP Home.

    **Edit**

XP Home does not come with the option for Simple File Sharing.

Check that File And Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is enabled. To check, do the following:

    Open your Network Connections

Right Click your Local Area Connection

    Properties

Make sure the File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks is checked.

If it is not on there, you may be able to install it by clicking the install button. Then choose Service (I could be wrong), if you don't see it under Service, try Client, then Protocol

    G'luck

Yeah, check what he said above. I've not dealt with Home Edition before, but I do know Simple File Sharing is not an option in that OS, but only in Pro.

Are you able to see the shared resources but receive an error when you try to access them? If so, check this posible solution out
