does instant messaging on your mobile phone cost money?

an instant message is just like a text message, if you have a text message plan then its free as long as you dont go over your texts or if you got unlimited then its free...if you dont have any text plan then its 10 cents a message

Usually yes....Depends on your carrier... I have Verizon Wireless and its cost $10 a month for unlimited text messaging and if I didnt have it then it would cost 10 cents per message

I use AT&T cell phone provider, and yes I get charged. I don't have a texting plan though. BTW, before Cingular switched BACK to AT&T, it cost less to send texts/pictures now it cost about 5 cents more per text/picture. =/

It relies upon on which IM gadget you're utilising and your telephone.

It doesn't if it's already on your plan. I have a Sidekick with the Sidekick Unlimited plan which gives me unlimited everything except minutes. You might want to check before using anymore IMs.
