Am I the only American who thinks "Political Correctness" is becoming too much of a bad thing?

Examples; social persecution for spanking your kids in public, not talking about religion publically, having to fill out paperwork that wants to know your age, sex, race..

Seems to me that if something is "PC" it is also something that you are forbidden to question. Makes me think of Germany in 1930's.

In a society that requires every citizen to question things affecting their life, PC becomes a way to prevent us from questioning things.

So are we getting 'choked' by all the PC based behaviors?

Update:

Sorry to have offended-a better example; the obesity issue-becoming 'wrong' for certain humans to fall prey to genetics they can't stop.

A better question-is PC becoming a way for someone to "command" us beyond our individual wills?

Comformity is necessary for society, but I worry it becomes too powerful at some point.

My kids can't even have Christmas parties in school anymore they are holiday parties. So much is being taken away from them in fear of offending someone. Well screw that these are things we have done in our country for many many years and now we have to apologize for them?

Not hitting your kids has nothing to do with political correctness, it's about being forbidden to assault people except out of necessity or self-defence, i think that's a great lesson to teach your kids, i daresay we'd live in a much better world if the adults of today were taught such a lesson as children, rather than having the bejeezus belt out of them for any indiscretion.

the more and more i hear the term PC, almost always used scathingly, the more hear it associated with bigoted people as a term that simply means "the things i'm not allowed to call people'. It's not a matter of politcal correctness whether i use a slang, denigrating term for a woman or minority race or a more acceptable, less offensive term, it's a matter of respect.

I have never had to be careful to be politically correct, i simply respect that people are individuals who did not choose the colour of their skin or where they were brought up, or in what gender. I am somebody who abhors mass-generalisations, and respects the diversity within any group or category.

Political Correctedness therefore does not factor when you respect others as a rule, and that is not too say that you can't categorise or generalise people in any way, sociology as a science is completely concerned with this and is extremely "PC" about it. You don't have to say all black people are criminals to point out that for example, black people in america are disproportionate in the prison population to the caucasian population or other minorities, having respect means you have to think a bit harder about what your saying, it doesn't forbid you from asking questions, it forbids you from asking ridiculous questions or making ridiculous suppositions. I am very much pro-questioning, i don't think there is any question that is abhorrent or any problem with asking one.

I also don't think this paperwork where you have to fill in your personal details falls under the category of political correctedness, and such paperwork existed in the idyllic 1920's and before such inventions as PC.

I am not American but I can relate with what you are saying because Britain is going through exactly the same thing times ten. It seems like all minorities can be proud but when the people of the land act proud they get labelled racist and ignorant.

PC is usually just another term for treating people with respect. So...no. In fact we need more of it. As to spanking your kids in public....would you hit your wife in public also? Or do you find other ways to deal with your wife when she does something you dislike? Then why not find better ways of dealing with your kids when they misbehave? I guess that would be too much trouble for you.

I would say those that agree with all of this "political correctness" are the ones in the minority, if they even exist. I can't recall hearing one person say they were happy about it.

Why don't you just use common sense when you speak? That's all. Be true and abstain from being a follower, but use common sense and godly thought when you speak.

    I agree... completely
