Fans of Stone Temple Pilots: What is your assessment of Axl Rose?
Every so often, there’s a rock band that perhaps you didn’t fully appreciate until it’s too late. Chalk up STP for this category. When they first came out with Core, I wasn’t impressed. They came off sounding like a Nirvana rip off, not to mention that particular album would go down as one of the most overplayed in alternative music history. I believe they got better with each album, constantly evolving their sound. So, how does Axl Rose fit into all this? Besides being a legendary jerk, I get the feeling that not only did his selfish actions destroy Guns N Roses but indirectly led to the demise of STP. In case anyone wasn’t aware, Scott Weiland was drafted as the lead singer with the other remaining members of the former GnR to form Velvet Revolver. I can’t help but think that the rest of STP got the short end of that stick. They ended up becoming Army Of Anyone and toil in virtual obscurity.
x jessi x – It’s always tragic when someone squanders a gift. That’s what insanity will do to you.
Sookie – I’m really shocked that Army of Anyone has been totally ignored. They have the former lead singer from Filter, Richard Patrick, and I wouldn’t consider that much of a downgrade. Everyone loves the mystique of the junkie, I guess. As for Axl, dead on.
Darth Maul - Thanks! One can only hope that diehard GnR fans will not waste their money on this alleged album. I’m still not convinced it will ever see the light of day.
Steve B - Yes, and he supposedly lost that fight too. Love that story.
Mike – You make an excellent point. The DeLeo brothers were sick of his unreliable behavior and his “chemical romance.” I don’t doubt they meant what they said at the time about never wanting to work with him again. I’m sure they said the same thing right before they tried doing Talk Show. The sad truth is that the rest of STP can’t seem to succeed without Weiland. I’m absolutely certain the brothers would have gladly welcomed him back at any time. Had it not been for VR, I’m sure he would have. I’m actually amazed that Weiland stayed relatively clean for as long as he did. Of course, I just read he got himself a DUI. Oh, well, some things never change.
SJG - That's a very interesting angle you present as far as being underground and the press machine, didn’t really think about that, great stuff.
Sylvia – We should have hung out during the 90’s. Most people I knew weren’t head over heals in love with Core at the time. And you’re right about Weiland, he’s quite the showman.

I like Army of Anyone. Sure they aren't popular but they make good music. The Deleo brothers are awesome in my book. Anyway.. not the point. My opinion on Axl is that he once made some good music, but let his ego get in the way. His former bandmates have moved on and continue to make good music that is valid in todays music scene while he is still trying to rehash this pseudo GNR reunion. He's pathetic. In a way I feel bad for him. He and his Chinese Democracy is the biggest joke in music. Now I don't really buy that Axl broke up STP. In my opinion addictions and Weiland's bipolar tendenceies broke them up...However members of both vr and aoa have alloted to a reunions possibility, so while they are both good groups, I would die if STP reunited. Oh and Core is one of my all time favorite albums. :)

I'm of the belief that STP was done, not due to the formation of Velvet Revolver, but due to Weiland's addictions. In fact, the DeLeo brothers said that they would no longer work with him after the last cancelled tour. The last STP album was released in 2001. The first Velvet Revolver album didn't come out until 2004.
Personally, I enjoyed the Core album and a few tracks off of Purple. Otherwise, STP never moved me. I'm really not very partial towards Velvet Revolver either. I guess I'm not a very big fan of Weiland's vocals... especially knowing that Sebastian Bach was consdered at one point. As faar as abilities go, there's certainly no comparing those two.
As for Axl's "new" project... Guns N' Roses could have been the biggest band in the world for a long, long time. His paranoia and egotistical manuevring killed that notion. I've heard enough of the Chinese Democracy demos to know that they're not very good, but at the same time, morbid curiosity will probably compell me to purchase the album if it is ever released.... kinda the equivalent of not being able to look away from the six car pile up on the interstate.

Well I admit to being a big fan of GnR, but Axl seems to come off as a manipulative, selfish, egotistical, whiney prick. He's nothing without Slash, Duff and even Izzy. I've also always been a big STP fan, but I've never cared for Scott Weiland as a person either. But joining Velvet Revolver was a smart (or lucky) move that he made. I think their 2 albums are very good. You're right about the other guys that went on to form Army Of Anyone. I bought their album thinking it had to be fairly decent, and even though it wasn't exactly bad, it was just so boring and uninteresting that I never really listened to it again. This is probably why Richard Patrick is working on another Filter record now. Earlier this year, I heard STP would reunite for some sort of benefit concert or something, but nothing has come of that so far.

I'm not sure if I'd exactly describe myself as an STP fan but I have a soft spot for a few of their songs.
My assessment of Axl Rose is that he has been washed up for years and I would be surprised if he could do anything to redeem himself. The other members of GnR could see that so they formed Velvet Revolver with Scott Weiland and they have gotten a lot of good attention.
I think there are few instances when a singer from one band can jump into another one and not disrupt the delicate balance of things. Boy do I need a drink - this is just awful. I can't answer a simple question to save my life : (

Axl is a legendary jerk and an over rated singer. But I don't really hold him responsible for STP going down the tubes. I think a complete break up was inevitable, because you can just see they (the band) were tired of carrying Weiland's drug numbed anus around with them. Literally dead weight. Plus him being in jail prevented STP from touring 3/4 of the time. Don't get me wrong I think Weiland is a much more talented singer and lyricist in a heroine induced coma than Axl is at any point.
Anyway, Army of Anyone wasn't even that bad of a release, I actually enjoyed it, I think RIchard Patrick's voice with their music takes a little getting used to, but once that happened I liked it. Velvet Revolver on the other hand I think is kind of a waste of time. They have a couple good songs but in genereal, they are a waste of my time.

Remember the Led Zep tribute album entitled Enconium? STP did one of the best and repectable covers. Of course, no one can fully feel the shoes of Led Zep. However, STP got my attention.
I don't really buy the fact that Axl depature forced Scott Weiland to leave STP. Scott Weiland has a weakness for money apparently due to another weakness and left on his own. Even those Axl was destructive toward G n R, can't lay the demise of STP at his feet.

I think Axl has become way too self absorbed about his poetic legendary status. He now seems a big charade of his formal wild self. I don't get off on any of his new stuff. Weiland was outta STP and entered into a drug haze diet program as the front for Velvet Revolver. He was hittin' the smack while still with STP...they may have let him go with the door held wide open...I think Army of Anyone didn't jump on the publicity bandwagon...they have become "Underground"...Kinda like Kris from Nirvana...Dave Grohl hitched onto that press machine and boom...he's The Foo Fighters...Kris didn't and he's "Underground". Depends on an artist's desire for the money and fame...some just don't like it twice.

I agree - the band did get a raw deal. I liked some of STP's stuff and what I did like I liked on the band level - I was never a huge Weiland fan. I was hoping to see them do something bigger and better when all of that went down, and it's too bad that it hasn't happened.
How do I feel about Axl? He's a loser, no matter what. His fans don't owe him any favors, and it will be interesting to see how many of them show up on the off-chance that Chinese Democracy is ever released.
Edit: LOL - I guess I meant "bigger and better" in terms of popularity. I've never heard that new band...hmmm...

Wow! You're the first person I've ever talked to that's shared my belief of STP. I thought they were just some label's Next Big Thing, cashing in on the success of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains when they first broke. And I COULD. NOT. stand them.
I must say that one thing changed my mind for all time: seeing them live. Scott Weiland is, quite possibly, the perfect rock star. His antics on stage make it totally worth the price of admission. Beyond that, seeing them live kind of shifted my perspective of them, and I grew to appreciate (and ultimately love) them on a whole new level.
Honestly, I think Mike's right. At the end of the day, Scott is his own worst enemy, and the demons of addiction that he battles are ultimately what led to the demise of the Pilots.

Big Fan of STP and nice assessment of them.
Axl Rose is the "Kiss Of Death" Rockets, excepting "Appetite" and "Lies" everything that Man has ever touched musically has fell to ----. The guy is several bricks short of a full load.
Oh yeah, while I'm at it. Axl can call Chinese Democracy a G&R album all He wants, but it ain't
Velvet revolver is a close as it'll ever get to really being G&R
