Would you cross a picket line?

The nurses in California are on strike AGAIN second time in 2 months. My fiance does finishing construction hanging tracks and drapery and things of that nature. His boss has contracts with a few local hospitals and the nurses are all union. His boss also has a second job as a union stagehand for local concert venues. Therefore his boss won't cross a union picket line even if it has nothing to do with him directly. So would you cross a picket line if you were union with another job? Why or why not?

Update:

Ready2go.. I know not all nurses are on strike. Its affecting a few hospitals in the bay area which is the same hospital that was affected 2 months ago when they went on strike. Its the sutter health hospital in the the bay area. I would love for him to go to work but he won't go without his boss.

Update 2:

barthebear: amen brother!! that's about how i feel too. they make more money than I ever will and they want to walk off the job to prove they want MORE money. no wonder nobody can afford health insurance. and i do believe that is part of what they are striking about is their own health insurance.

Yes I would. The nurses I happen to know want 19 percent raise and they already make $116, 000 a year at our local hospital which is striking today. All that means is that our health insurance premiums will raise higher to pay them what they want since the hospitals which are already going broke due to people who have no insurance , will have to charge more. Wow you got me started on that but basically a strike is against us all not just the employer since eventually the employer will raise the price of the product on us. So yes I have and I will cross picket lines. However I know people who have been injured doing so so that is probably why his boss wont cross. Unions are getting desparate but I think it highly UN professional of the nurses

First I evaluate the situation. At retail establishments I always cross picket lines. I even go out of my way to do so. At other locations I am careful to evaluate the situation first. Union thugs slash tires, threaten your life and promise to track you, find out where you live and threaten to burn your home down and kill your family. I will avoid that. I have had that happen and that is why I HATE union thugs. Do Unions really think they are winning people over to their side when they engage in such behavior? They are not only extortionists but they are terrorists.

Not all nurses are on strike in CA! I have 2 friends that are RN's & they are both currently working & not on strike.

In fact, one is the union rep & I would know if he was on strike & he's not!

Tell your BF to go to work. Even if he worked at the hospital he's not "crossing" the picket line.

Unions had their place in history. They are really pointless now. Although with a joblike nursing there is great demand. But i always see people picketing at factories and they end up just losing their job to people who need the money more.

    I wouldn't.

However 2 things might change my mind.

    1) I was very desperate. My family would take precedent over somebody's union.

    2) If the union demands seemed unreasonable.

these are just my opinions. I respect the job the unions have done for all of America.

Unless I am a member of a union which has agreed to support the striking union, I'm a free agent.

not crossing is a decision you have to make. To be a scab (one who crosses the line) can

lose you some friends. No, I wouldn't cross. Say the strike was over tomorrow, the nurses were back at work and recognize a scab construction worker that crossed their line come in with dire injuries, who's gonna be the last person they want to treat? I wouldn't want it to be me!

No I would not cross. I support unions as they have been instrumental in improving the lives of American workers. Added comment.......I don't know of any nurse making $116K a year except perhaps a senior administrator. Most RN's make about $60K per year.

This whole strike thing goes way too far. Let the nurses have their negotiations with the Hospital - doesn't mean the whole city has to come to a standstill.

i can say i do not cross a picket line in support of the union workers with one exception, if i needed to get medical treatment for a life saving illness, then i would cross the line to get medical help....i hope this does not angry people, but life is the most important issue to me.....
