Would a plaster wall support a wall-mount for a ~15 pound LCD TV? Or do I need to find the studs?

I dig the way you do business. You don't need to hit the studs. Pre-drill small holes, if you can, and don't over tighten the screws. Make sure and alternate the screws height because the lathe typically runs horizontally and you don't want all the screws in the same strip. If the screw misses the lathe, try a new location. Use at least 6-8 screws if possible. I mean we're only talking about 15lbs here. That tv ain't coming down and it will really tie the room together.

Try dropping your TV from a 5 foot height. If it still works after that, you do not need to find the studs because it will survive the drop. If it does not work after that, you do not need to find the studs because you do not have a TV any more. In either case, you do not need to find the studs. Why go through a whole lot of extra work for nothing?

with the right hook, it'll support more than that. i have a 50lb mirror hanging off plaster on masonry. it helps if you get an anchor that angles down into the wall and predrill the hole. if you don't predrill, the plaster could crumble at the surface. some people put double stick tape or making tape sticky side out under the hole to catch the dust.

edit: i don't even bother with studs anymore, they're too hard to find thru plaster. unfortunately, miss smarty pants, the other kind of stud is also hard to find.

Definetely find the studs,,,,,or when you open the wall, put some 2x4's crosswise between the existing studs and then use your new pieces as the anchors. DO NOT trust drywall to support a tv....VERY expensive mistake.

    Dear Dude,

Find studs unless you and your TV have a deathwish.
