You can start by 'Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple' then 'Judas Priest, Iron Maiden'; for modern bands you could hear of 'Lamb of God, Shadow's Fall, Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth' for heavier songs..I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers for alternative.
