there are a lot of dream theories - the theory that your dreams are manifestations of your hopes and fears - freud - this is very popularized
there is also a theory that your brain undergoes a lot of random stimulation during REM as part of a "clean up" process - and when these different impulses hit different parts of your brain you see or hear a bunch of random stuff - and then in dreams your brain tries to weave it into a semisensible storyline - cuz as humans we just try to make sense of things
its just different perspectives ways of interpreting things - justg as people who read a metaphorical work will interpret it differently.
if you take it from freuds theory your friend could be feeling like an outsider, always looking in on people. you could say you are more self involved. you could probably make different interpretations all your life and all of them could be completely valid
