Semi-Pro looking to buy first D-SLR, please HELP?

I have been shooting photos on film now for several years but I am a little lost when it comes to what digital camera I should get. I am looking for a camera with high quality photos, lots of control over my pics, and great equipment for my investment.

So far I have been considering the Canon Digital Rebel or Canon Digital Rebel XTi. Which would be a better or choice or are their other models/brands out there which would serve me better?

The XTi is the lowest of the DSLR range. Mid-range is the 40D ($1300) and above that is the full frame 5D (>$2000). The XTi has full manual control and is compatible with Canon EF and EF-S lenses. Check the link for a world of info.

The XTi is the updated version of the Digital Rebel. It's a great camera and should serve you well for many years.

If you want, you can also look at other offerings from Nikon(D40/D40x/D80), Pentax (K100D/K100D Super/K10D), Sony A700.

When I was looking to switch over to digital I purchased the Rebel. Later I purchased the 30d and relegated the Rebel to back up camera. I thought that was a less painless way to do it, plus any lenses purchased would be transferable.
