Someone sent me a file with an .odt file extension (Open Office). How can I open this file in Microsoft Word?

Do I have to download Open Office to be able to read this file?

Word doesn't have support for .odt files, so long story short, you can't. However you can download a converter: http://odf-converter.sourceforge.net/ Or, you can take the easy route and ask the person who sent you the file to save the document again as a .doc file.

Of course, you can always download Open Office. It's free, easy, and works on many platforms.

This is a safe link where you can download winrar for free here http://bit.ly/1v2nWkq

You can use winrar to unzip zip files (or to open compressed folder). 7zip or winzip are other softwares you can use for the same purpose but winrar is by far the best one. All these programs work in a very similar way: you just have to right click the file to zip or unzip any folders or files.

If you don't want a trial version don't worry. The trial period of winrar never ends so you can use it for free with no limitations.

With WINRAR you will be able to open all the type of compressed folder like file .zip, .rar, .7z, .7zip .iso, .tar, .jar etc... that's the main reason why I recommend it.

you can't.. and think for a sec.. who'd wanna do that?. probably trying to subtedly tell you something. best to kinda think about Libre or openOffice. they're both free for one thing. both of these suites run under linux & windows. my preference is libre as openOffice was "hijacked" by Oracle with the Sun takeover but they're not devoting the time to it that Sun did. Oracle, though. don't count them out in other respects as their freebee "VisualBox" is deserving of some serious mention here (also acquired from Sun but very actively supported).

Sadly, Microsoft Word does not support the open document format. OpenOffice can save as .doc format. Can you ask the person to resave it and resend it?
