In French how do I say, "They were are a part of ...?

"They were a part of our family"

This one needs imparfait so I think it starts off with...

Ils étaient....?

    Ils faisaient partie de notre famille.

    "faire partie de" = to form part of / to be part of

    Ils étaient une partie de notre famille/groupe

    If it literally means family then say famille.

    And if it doesnt use groupe.

    You can also say "ils appartenaient à nôtre famille"
