How much does it cost to patent an idea?

I have many ideas for inventions and although I've been to the United States Patent & Trademark website, I still don't know how much it costs to patent an idea due to all their double talk and whatnot. I understand that this cost may vary state to state; therefore I'd like to mention that I am residing in the state of Kentucky.

I'm not sure about how well this would hold in court but apparently you make two of the product, pack one up, take it to your local post office and mail it to yourself. Don't open it. Keep it somewhere safe. Market the other copy of your product. If anyone needs proof that you invented it, you have a sealed, government stamped article with the date. Open it in court to reveal your product... viola!

(I assume that if it's an idea you could just write it on a piece of paper and do the same process)

-Again, no idea about the validity of this.. it's called a poor-man's patent. Considering that it goes through the postal system, it may be legit.

You dont copyright or trademark ideas. What you need is a patent. Get info at the patent office website.
