Rivera & Mazzola together could have taken Brazil's weak defense apart in the 1970 Final?

Mazzola had played well in the first half, while golden boy Riva did not. It was unthinkable to take Mazzola off at halftime. So, why did'nt Valcareggi put in Rivera for say De Sisti at the half instead of the last 6 minutes when the game was already lost? Most make the mistake of trying to stop Brazil's fine attack, rather than go after their weakness, their porous defense. Valcareggi cost Italy dearly, & many will never forgive him.

Wow, I've heard my dad say the same... thanks for a blast from the past. Yes, Italy was the best team in 1970 despite losing the WC final.

Why did Ramsey take Bobby Charlton off against Germany at Mexico 70. Beckenbauer was nowhere to be seen then all of a sudden Sir Bobby goes off and the Kaiser takes the game by the scruff of the neck!!

Great point about Rivera, an absolute genius of a player !! But, that final of 70 is one of my fave games and you summed it up by giving due credit to the attacking force the Brazilians had. Rivera, as good as he was, wouldn't have stopped the likes of Pele, Gerson, Jairzinho etc

The thing was, Brazil rarely lost the ball and that's the reason why their defence didn't have to be water tight. Brazil actually played some of their better football in the earlier rounds of that tournament and had they not lifted the trophy it would have been a sham.

As I say, Rivera was a gem of a player ..... but the SAS wouldn't have stopped Brazil from winning the Jules Rimet in 1970
