Help with multiplication process?

I feel stupid writing this but I learned multiplication with this weird form called lattice. Now I am tutoring and I need to learn the traditional way. Could someone please explain it and let me know if they have any tricks.

Lattice is really just another form of the traditional way. There is also another way called partial products which is also similar to lattice and traditional.

I am not sure what age you are tutoring, but I teach fourth grade. We just finished up our multiplication unit, and the traditional way is not really taught anymore. If the student can use lattice successfully, then they needn't get confused with the traditional strategy.

If you are still interested, I can try to explain...

    Let's say you are multiplying 29X 31

    1. You would first multiply 1X9 and write it below the one.

    2. Then multiply 1X2 and write that answer below the three - it is actually 1X20 because the 2 represents 2 tens. That is why you write the 2 under the three in the tens column.

    3. Then multiply 3X9 and write that answer under the three, and in what would be the hundreds place because it is actually 30X9 which would be 270

    4. Then multiply 3X2 and write that in the hundreds place, because it is really 30X20 which would be 600.

    5. Next, add up the three numbers 29+270+600 and you get your answer of 899.

The computer is not letting me line up my numbers correctly, so I hope the directions are okay without the model.

    Good luck!
