How do I put the volume icon back into the notification area?

It disappeared a few days ago but I don't know why. I tried right-clicking on the notification area > properties > notification area > customize, but there's no volume icon on there. How can it just disappear? Also, where it says "select which system items to always show," volume is faded and is impossible to check.......

So now I can only change the volume through the Control Panel. I tried using that to restore the volume icon to the notification area but I don't know how....... :(

Please help!

If your using XP double click "sounds and audio devices" in the control panel. On the volum tab there should be a check box for "place volume icon in taskbar" check the box and you should get it back.

You may also want to look at you device manager since your volum option was grayed out it could be a problem with you sound card/drivers.

    Did you restart?

Do you have sound at all?
