If you do not personally OWN the media, what you want to do is copyright infringement. You can go to jail or be fined if caught. If you DO own the media, then you can legally make a backup copy, however, the backup copy can not be given away or sold but must be destroyed or go with the original if you sell or give away the original.
Now, as to how you make a backup copy. You need a program to do that for you. Some programs will recognize that the DVD is copyrighted material and refuse to copy it. They do this in a effort to prevent you from breaking the law. They have no way to know whether you are making a legal backup or an illegal copy and opt to err on the side of caution. Other programs which can make DVD's simply won;t care and will let you do anything. Getting whatever you get onto your hard disk into your ipod is another matter. Most likely, you will need yet another program to take the file output from the DVD burner program to convert it for use on your ipod. Do a search using your favorite search engine. This is not an easy task. And now you know why I do NOT have a proprietary device, which an ipod IS by the way...

what you do is download a program called handbrake, (this is perfectly legal as long as you own the dvd your buring) after downloading put your movie in your computer and open up handbrake, select the movie and hit rip. It will take a while to download and if you have a lap top do not close it, as this will not let it copy properly, then drag it to itunes and it will automatically download to itunes, then just put it on your ipod

ok, dvd to iPod?
I use this tool: Moyea DVD to iPod Converter. It's a professional tool for this conversion. What I like best is that it divides dvd into different chapters, so I can rip my I favorite ones. Besides the fast conversion speed and perfect quality, with this tool the most attractive advantage is that it supports batch conversion, also convert files you selected to only one.
You can click to http://www[dot]my-video-converter[dot]com/dvd_to_ipod/ free download it, have a try, or you will like it.
