Engine momentarily dies for 1/2 second in 1978 Ford van?

We have a 1978 Ford van with the original Duraspark ignition firing a 351 V8. While driving the engine will stop running for about 1/2 second then resumes. When it resumes you hear a puff from the exhaust. This is a random event but the duration is consistent and seems to only happen when power is demanded. I remember seeing on one of those TV repair shows that the Duraspark had problems but I can't remember if it was version 1 or 2. Is this a common problem? What should I try replacing first? Should I go to the extra expense and replace it with a more modern system?

you might want to check on the condition of some of the engine components. are your spark plugs good? are the wires good? is your fuel pump still operational? what about the fuel filter? these items may be causing your engine to "pause"

it's the control module....owned a lot of fords....my taurus did that...engine died and then came back to life, car backfired and blew the muffler LOL! it's a square aluminum looking box mounted on maybe the fenderwell...maybe 2 connectors.there is a colored plastic where the wires go into it......just ask for module with that color.....autozon or advanced auto.....999% sure of this
