I stopped paying my credit card, now Court???

I stopped paying my credit card, which was about $700 in 2005, now i received a letter from court, that i have to pay it within 28 days with an interest, which is about $1400. If i don't than i will have to go to court.

I'm leaving the country for about 3 month maybe more and will not pay them. Why they just can't put it on my credit and forget about it?

P.S. Please don't say, you should pay your bills on time.I don't care about my credit, because i don't want to live in states and i will not, so what can happened???

Update:

My city court mailed it to me. And, yes, i will not work in U.S.

It sounds like a phony collection attempt by one of those corrupt collection agencies.

The court does not send you a notice to pay first, they send you a notice of the court hearing, if you default and don't show then the court will notify you that you lost the case.

Courts don't collect the money, they can only enforce a judgment which allows the collection company to garnish your wages.

HOWEVER, not paying means your credit score will hit the basement and it can affect not only your credit, but chances for future employment or the ability to obtain student loans.

P.S remember that just because you leave the country you are free, most major banks now work internationally and all information passes between them.

They'll take you to court and get a default judgment against you if you don't show up. Then the court can issue a wage attachment with your present job and the debt will be on your credit report. It will also be public knowledge with other creditors. If you're not going to work in the States, then it'll remain on your credit for a minimum of 7 years.

Your city's court mailed you about this? Or the credit card company? Or was it a law firm?

If you're leaving the USA for good....fine....If you come back...bad credit will haunt you in the form of rejected credit applications....
