Why does the moon have a companion star tonight?

I've checked for the past 4 hours and a star is moving along with the moon. It was closer earlier, but it's still within the halo cast by the full moon. Is this the mothership like in the movie Independence Day?

This is the planet Mars, which is really 55 million miles from the moon, and only looks close to our line of sight.

it rather is the planet Venus. It does no longer twinkle via fact, quite than being a tiny factor of light, you are able to truthfully see a floor. Venus is the 2d-brightest night merchandise after the Moon. Venus is presently seen each night in the southwest from approximately 6:00p to 11:00p. it is seen to all components of the globe around that factor.

they both appear to be moving due to the earth's rotation. THe " star" is the planet Mars. Tomorrow it willl be in nearly the same place, but the moon will have moved eastward. There are no ships up There.

i believe it is mars. during the winter times mars hangs around the moon, i saw it as well. what is weird, if you count the halos around the moon is when it's going to rain next...i've done it several times and it always seems to hold true

Interesting. I didn't see the companion star. It's cool when the moon has a halo.
