What kind of jobs do Orthodox Jews get? Also do you go to Israel every year?

They have to take Fridays and Saturdays off, they also have to take off for Holidays. Have you found your job to be accommodating?

Do you go to Israel every year and for how long?

Update:

(I can't leave thumbs down, I'm level 1, so it wasn't me)

Well, we don't have to take Fridays off because Shabbat doesn't start until a little before sunset--this means more work for us Thursday, because we leave early Friday. Most jobs allow you one day off and it's usually pretty easy to ask for Saturday off instead of Sunday. It's a little harder to take off for the holidays, whether at work or in school, since there are so many--but students try to make up the work beforehand and people who are working might ask someone else to cover their hours that day, and on days like Xmas and stuff we would cover for them, or whatever holiday or whenever they wanted a day off.

In general, we don't go to Israel every year. There are some that do, but most I know don't. It's very expensive. In fact my boyfriend's mother who is Israeli hasn't been in years--it's just life. We're not all fabulously rich and drive sports cars, either ;-) Not that I thought you think that, but some do.

    Peace

(and I didn't give everyone above me thumbs down)

I am a conservative, reformed, orthodox Christian but work with several Orthodox Jews. (The terms are slightly different for Christians, orthodox being the closest term)

They seem to be very accommodating where I am. We have several at work. Its a little harder for commuters because they must be home by sunset Friday. They leave on Friday early to commute home and work from there. It is not really a problem that I can see. They seem to partner with a non orthodox person to cover the times they cannot and it seems to work out.

I think they go fairly often to Israel. I don't know if they go every year.

Edit: I am always curious why the thumbs down... hmmm too bad they dont leave a comment.

I leave work early on Fridays. It has been a condition I have insisted on in every job I have taken. When it comes to holidays, they come off my annual leave, but the company I work for gives a lot of leave so its not too much of an issue.

As for going to Israel every year- I wish I could, I just can't afford to.

I have several friends who are Orthodox and they all have jobs that are in the professional realm so they typically only have to be there from 9am-5pm on weekdays. (teachers, doctors, lawyers, bankers, etc) Actually all of my friends that are not self-employed, regardless of religion, only work on the weekdays. Why take a weekend-working job if you don't have to? Yuck.

The rules about working restrictions only refers to high holy days (which is no more difficult to arrange than any other Christian holidays) and the weekly observance that only falls from sundown Friday until sundown Saturday. So you can still go to work on Friday without any difficulty.

As for going to Israel every year, I don't know if there is any religious schedule that dictates that. I just know that most of my Jewish friends go there as often as they can afford it, especially if they have a lot of friends and family there. It is a very common "gap year" trip for recent high school grads.

    We manage....

I have a friend who, like me, is a public school teacher, so the hours are fine. My friend's husband programs business software, and his employers are understanding. He stays later every day in order to be able to leave early on Fridays.

Most of us have regular jobs and understanding bosses. Some of us operate small businesses.

As for Israel, I have not been in years as I cannot afford it... My friend who has in-laws in Israel goes with her husband and children as often as they can manage, which is once every two years or so.
