I-Dog troubleshooting - no sound from iPod!?

My daughter got an i-dog for christmas. It 'dances' to music when played on a speaker, but won't react to music through the plug - we tried her mp3, my ipod, even a direct connection to the computer speakers (which worked without the jack). Nothing. Before I break her heart and send it back...and suggestions??

    try putting in different batteries. mine did the same thing till i replaced the batteries

    Maybe the plugs arent connected right happened to me with my mp3
