It is very good but if you are looking for a perfect weapon for a reasonable cost your best bet is a 12 Gage shotgun with a 3 1/2 camber. You can blow holes into the wall big enough to find your predator and you can send slugs out 60 yards which for street protection is perfect

Interesting question. I have recently been a little worried about the possibility of a violent civil out break and have been doing a little investigation on what fire arms are good to have for various reasons. I'm not sure what shtf means but, I think an sks is a good reliable powerful rifle, 10 rounds wouldn't make me feel as comfortable as 30 personally but if you know how to use it that would be fine for like a hunting or sniping situation. I think a nice shot gun and a sidearm would be nice too.

I don't know that ANY weapon will be adequate when the SHTF,
but I DO know that ANY weapon will be 100% better than NO weapon.
In that regard, you already have an upper hand.
I recomend you get yourself a surplus gas mask bag with a shoulder strap and stuff it with 7.62x39 loaded on stripper clips.
Keep it with the rifle.
Protecting yourself isn't so much about how many rounds your rifle can shoot before reloading, it's about how accurately and effectively you can utilize the weapon.
Practice untill you are damn good,
Have confidence,
And you'll be OK.
PS
You wouldn't HAVE TO buy a new rifle to have larger magazine capacity.
has extended magazines for your SKS,
But I'd still prefer using the factory mag and stripper clips for reliability reasons if I were you.

It depends on many factors. Where do you live? Are you permitted to have a higher capacity magizine by law? if yes then the answer to your question is no. if you are restricted to 10 round magizines then it would sufice nicely. The seconed most important factor is how effective and and practiced you are at putting shots on target, tactical reloads and imidiate action drills. Along with a marid of other skills. I would suggest having and being proficiant witha handgun in addition to your carbine. I agree, a shotgun would be my first choice over a carbine. having a pistol as a back up.
