Chevy engine only smokes after idling. Uses very little oil.Does not smoke when on the road?

Second answer is pretty close, but it depends on what color the smoke is. Black is fuel, Blue is oil.

Another source of smoke is the drain holes in the heads. They gum up and hold oil so it goes down the valve guides.

Also the PVC valve can be stopped up and not venting the engine.

If its when you first start the engine, it is likely the valve guides are worn. this is typicaly on chevy v-8 engines with higher miles.

I had a problem in which my truck did that and the fuel pressure regulator was bad. This is another common problem on alot of these vehicals.

if you have other symtoms such as hesitation, hard starting, and black smoke comming from the exhaust I would try replacing that fuel pressure regulator. They have a material that breaks down over time and makes the engine run rich causing the black smoke at certain times.
