what do you think of the following quote?

"You can't sit in Manhattan and be a Zionist just because you like oranges, falafel and come here once a year to argue in Jerusalem about 'Where is Zionism going?' There is only one answer: Zionism is going on here," wrote Israeli poet and essayist Yonatan Geffen. "Zionism as I see it exists only in its practical form. And as a person who likes shoes isn't a shoemaker, so a Jew who likes Israel isn't a Zionist.''

Update:

its true you can help the zionist movement from a far but is that what zionism is really about ...dont you think its moving to israel and becoming a citizen

Paperback and Juggling have excellent answers!

Are the people sitting in Manhattan practicing Zionism? They are not moving to Israel, but by supporting Israel from afar they are taking part in the movement..Zionism is the belief in the Jewish peoples' right to live as a free people in Israel. Anyone who shares this belief can identify as a Zionist!

Edit: yes, that is what Zionism is, but those who do not move to Israel can still agree with and support the cause. Being Zionist means they agree that we have the right to live in eretz yisrael, yes? "Zionism is an international political movement that supports a homeland for the Jewish People in the Land of Israel." So they can support this, ie. be a part of the movement, without actually moving, yes?

This the colonial dilemma of Zionism. You can not be a colonist while you are not living in the colony. But the colonial era is over and only exist in Zionist minds. You can not be an Afrikaans while you live in Holland.

Israel and old South Africa model of colonial rule.

What do I think? I think I can disprove that comment in one simple sentence:

I'm Jewish, I love Israel, and I'm a zionist. And having lived in Israel, I feel I'm qualified to make that comment.

To say that any Jew who likes Israel isn't a zionist it totally illogical. All 'zionism' means is the belief that Israel has the right to the 0.01% of the middle east that she takes up.

Israel is like any other country; there are bad things about her and there are good things. In the case of Israel, in my own experience, the good definitely outweighs the bad.

    - what a lovely quote; that's a wonderful answer :)

He is allowed to have his opinion - there is no litmus test for what is a Zionist - its a personal identification.

    Good Luck!!!

I guess its good then I am sitting in an apartment in the metro Providence, RI area - not that this guy is into stereotyping - not much for an openminded poet and essayist eh?

I think he expresses himself very poorly. Is he saying you can't be a zionist unless you live in the ersatz israel?

What is this about people liking shoes aren't makers?

You could have quoted a thousand different people. What made you pull this one out?

I prefer the quote (not sure by whom - Golda Meir? Henrietta Szold?) "Anyone who cries when Israel cries is a Zionist."

I guess I disagree with him, but I understand his point.

(I assume he is referring to Jews. There are a lot of Christians, mostly evangelical, who consider themselves Zionists, and on the basis of their bible strongly support Israel.)
