as an educator, i'd say the level of apathy has increased from generation to generation....with more ways to distract oneself and the reduced attention span of students, it's just a lack of motivation....sad really, because honestly, this is the most exciting time to be alive

One big problem is that kids are excelling because of the internet, CTV, home computer.
You get into programming in HS and you've been doing Java and C++ and DOT NET for three years and you KNOW you know more than the teacher ever will, what do you do.
If you want to CS in college you have take the silly hs course!
When I was a kid in MS and HS I was one of may 2 or 3 students experimenting with animation and 8mm film.
Today half the world's 13 year old are making You Tube videos.
Imagine this crop of kids with Mini DV cameras and Movie Maker when they go to college and take filmmaking 1
COLLEGE will be boring!
Can you imagine 35-40 jaded You Tube experts in a UCLA Cinema 1 course that you HAVE to take and once again you know more than the "Professor" about the stuff.

Yes, kids are bored! Teachers have to teach to the standardized tests because that all that matters. Teaching with substance doesn't matter anymore, just pass the end of the year test.
Also, No Child Left Behind doesn't help. The world needs ditch digger too, all people will not be college educated.

In this 21st century, There are numerous means of getting knowledge for students. They may be interested than the traditional school teaching. For example, Television, radio, newspaper, megazine, especially Internet. We can not stop these new changes in the method of learning. (I have found this through my experience, Because I am a teacher.)

The reason for this is because of the NCLB law. This federal law mandates all public schools to have high scores and they will GET MORE MONEY.
The way this is determined is, the students in the school have to take a yearly test and the scores they make on this test is to see how well the SCHOOL is doing, and NOT how well the student is doing.
The better the score the MORE MONEY the school will get.
So in order to get more money, the teachers now teach what is going to be on these tests. They spoon feed the information that is on the tests into the students like robots.
The students no longer get to LEARN, they have to MEMORIZE. They get the ANSWER fed to them, but do not get to LEARN and FIND OUT the answer for themselves.
So, America is turning out future generations of illiterate people who will be running our country.
All thanks to EVERYONE's tax dollars and the good ol government.

Students are always finding school boring for as long as schools have been around.
