Each point is .01 ct... so a five point diamond is only .05 ct.. a 1/4 is .25 ct - therefore the 1/4 ct(.25) is much larger then the .05ct or 5 point, ring....

I admire your approach to use the money for something mutual. I agree, diamonds are not the most important thing in the world. But, if you still want to get yourself a diamond ring without spending an arm and a leg – clarity enhanced diamonds might be the answer for you. That’s what I did and I’m very happy :) CE diamonds are real diamonds which were lab treated (with laser usually) to increase their clarity. Bezel set would also be a good option for you because it makes the ring look more impressive, without having a huge center stone, but first I suggest that you educate yourself about CE diamonds. A quarter carat is 25 points and so a larger diamond although if they are in the same price bracket the quality may be poorer.

As an eternity ring anything less than a quarter carat will be tiny :o(
