Mean teacher is one who uses their power for their own benefit or pleasure at the expense of students.

Nice teacher is one who is zealous in teaching and making sure that the lesson is properly communicated and understood.

It's not such a black and white issue... I don't think you should be looking at whether a teacher is "mean or "nice"... some people think a teacher is "mean" if they don't accept late homework....give me a break.

I look at it this way. Is a teacher effective? I personally think a teacher is effective if ....

    1) The teacher clearly communicates expectations.

    2) The teacher enforces rules, but does so fairly across the board.

    3) The teacher does not verbally abuse the students.

    4) The Teacher has every student's best interests in mind.

    That's my two cents...

A nice teacher is consistent, firm, fair, and happy. A mean teacher is one that is either punitive, or permissive. Punitive meaning that you're sure the teacher is thinking (or saying) "Sit down, be quiet, do your work, because I am the teacher and I deserve your love and respect." A permissive teacher is the kind that never set the limit, and are always saying "You know you're not supposed to do that, if you do it again... I really wish you would... I hope that you will..." when they are talking about discipline. Permissive teachers are the kind that are afraid of setting limits because they don't want the kids to be mad at them. Both, in my opinion, make bad teachers, and bad teachers are at some point going to come off as mean. So, again, a nice teacher is one that is consistent, firm, fair, and happy.

A mean teacher is one that has the attitude of the students their teaching. They're the kind of teacher who definitely thinks waay to highly of themselves and sometimes even disses the kids in class. A nice teacher is the type that's tough but fair. This is the kind that can be the best ever or your worst enemy if you get on their bad side.

A mean teacher is one that is not fair. A nice teacher is one that is willing to help and is fair. Fair is testing on what he/she taught and not by picking little details from the book. That's the difference between a good and bad teacher.

Students rarely see the whole person when they see their teacher. Behaviors your teacher might have that you, as a student, find "mean" might be behaviors that also help that teacher to be consistent and fair. You may not find it fair because you can't see outside of your own discipline. If you were in your teacher's shoes, would you be able to catch every wrong doer effectively and never punish the innocent? It's a tough job. But your question isn't about perspectives as much as "mean" vs. "nice."

You should understand, however, that a "nice" teacher isn't always an effective teacher, and a "mean" teacher isn't always out to get you or does he/she not care about your learning. (I will be using "he" from now on, even though I don't think males are better or worse teachers than females.)

I would say, in my opinion, that a "mean" teacher is one that doesn't act in the professional manner he/she should in regards to student/teacher interaction. His speech would be discouraging to the student, both in self-esteem and ability. His speech would also not be discreet in speaking of students' deeds in front of others who don't need to hear. A "mean" teacher might punish a group in order to end up punishing one or two misbehaving students. He might raise his voice more than necessary and react more to student misbehavior than RESPOND to student misbehavior. He also may spotlight punishments and discouraging speech to a few students and refuse to highlight their good days/deeds.

A "nice" teacher is the one who seems to have found the balance between "authority figure" and "mentor/friend." He can find encouraging words for just about every student. He forgives past wrongs and tries to find ways to reward students for good choices. "Nice" teachers don't yell or name call. Nice teachers find ways to make their students feel special. Often students consider teachers "nice" if they don't end up "getting in trouble" in his room.

If it came to choosing a teacher on whether or not he was "mean" or "nice," I would add another criteria. I would want to know how much other students have learned from him and if they got excited about the subject he taught, regardless of being strict.

A mean teacher is one who gets mad at a student when not needed. A nice teacher is one who praises good students and don't get very angry at a bad one.

    A Nice Teacher

nice teachers usually have control over the class without using the method of holloring and disipline. theyre usually forgiving and look forward to solve your problems during their own time and yours as well. they treat you like your wanted and make the classes interesting. on the other hand mean teachers are there to get the lesson over with so they can get their salary. they punish you without listening to your side of the story. i understand homework is benificial to us but some time they over do by hours of our limmited free time. they usually dont make any of their perids fun, filling them with tests and pop quizes.

    hope that helps! :)

A mean teacher is one that is not fair, has favorites, is sharp and misunderstanding twords the students, and basically is a teacher that is not kindhearted and empathetic.
