Have you ever bought something, then found out it was stolen?

I bought a dvd set (Home Improvement: Season 2) for a friend for Christmas. I bought it from Best Buy. When my friend opened the gift she took off the protective plastic, opened the case, and it was empty. Instead of DVD's there was another plastic wrap with a price sticker on it. Here's the problem, I don't know if I have the receipt. And of course I paid cash for it. Is there anything I can do without a receipt or am I just out the money?

Update:

The package was still in its original package. It was NOT opened.

you should NEVER buy anything that has already been opened !!! Sounds like someone did a great jog of resealing it. You could "try" to explain to the salesperson that it was already opened when you bought it and you didn't notice until you got home. He will probably tell you that he's sorry and there is nothing he can do for you. Sorry.
