Yamaha makes a really nice acoustic for starters. Once you learn the basics (which took me a year or so), you can switch to a higher quality acoustic (Gibson and Epiphone are good ones) or electric (Ovation and Laguna are my preferences).
Personally, I think steel-wrapped strings with nylon cores sound the best on acoustics. For a beginner guitar, I would buy some moderately-priced strings. Try to avoid the cheap ones, because they break and go out of tune a lot. Again, after you learn the basics, get a higher quality.
The type of wood isn't that important, in my opinion, but the quality of the shape is. If there are any obvious bumps, dents, or bruises on the surface or inside, avoid the guitar. This doesn't really matter if you're getting a solid-body (not hollowed out) guitar, but it's really important with acoustics.
I don't live in Cali so I don't know many good guitar stores, but I think a quick trip to Google can solve that problem.
If you have any other questions, email me and I'll answer them to the best of my ability.
Good luck!
