how can i clean my turtles shell?

ok i really want to clean my turtles shell but im afraid i may hurt him...i wouldnt be scared if it wasnt for his size he isnt an average sized turtle! he is tiny i mean like here is an image of him in a bowl:

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd111/ranagoode...

He is so small and timid im afraid he might freak out if i try to use even a soft toothbrush plus any tooth brush is way oversized for him. Any ideas?

Update:

Actually guys hes not a baby....this is jus the breed of turtle that he is. ?Its called a stinkpot musk turtle and he has been this small for 1&1/2 yrs now, and so thats as big as they get.

Update 2:

well i dont know guys...he doesnt bask he hates the air! he lives in a small tank but he isnt the size of a quarter anymore its more like a half dollar but he is a small guy.

That is not as big as they get. You must be doing something wrong because NO turtle stays that small. They are a small type of turtle but not the size of a penny.

That turtle full grown will be at least 3-5 inches.

Make sure you have a UV light and a basking spot. And do some more research because if it is a 1 1/2 year old turtle it should be much bigger.

I use a toothbrush and some warm, not hot, water when I found a turtle in my back yard. If there's moss on it, I kinda just rip the moss off then toothbrush the spot until it's all gone. Wait so it's just a turtle shell? Without the turtle? Pimp.

Are you sure thats a stinkpot? I used to have one and it grew very slowly but it was about the size of a plum at a year and a half. Either way, I wouldnt clean its shell unless it really needed it. If so, use a cotton ball, qtip, or wipe it gently with a wet paper towel.

I wouldn't clean it at all till his a bit bigger. But if you really have the desire to I would use a baby tooth brush. They are super soft and wouldn't hurt him.

Of course use light pressure cuz you dont wanna squish him.

Also you want to make sure that he has his full spectrum UV lighting because that will help him absorb his calcium so that his shell and bones will grow nice and strong. Look up calcium deficiency if you you need an example of what I am saying. (its bad.)

this is stage where the shell is bery soft right? it looks like it. i would just use a gentle motion with a paper towel. hes still too small to use a toothbrussh or anything so rough. NEVER USE SOAP!! not yet altest until the shell is hard or strong enough to hold damage.

turtle shells don't really need to be cleaned. but if you insist, what you can do is simply wet something like a qtip and gently scrub with that. don't use ANY soaps. He prob will freak out though.

    ALSO!!!

You could try a makeup brush or an eye shadow wand :]

There is a wax that sells in any pet store, I have a turtle too, and what I do is I just put it on the palm of my hand then with the other hand I rubbed the shell with the wax with one finger very gently, it works for me.
