To you think that teams should try to trade for Johan Santana in the offseason?

Before you say I'm crazy, is it really necessary to give up lots of great prospects with lots of talent for a guy who becomes a free agent next year. You'll probably have to sign him again after the season since he will probably test the market. Say you're the Yankees, and you give up Hughes, Cabrera, and two decent prospects for a guy you'll have for 1 year and end up paying a 5 year $140 million contract to. Is it woorth it?

It's not worth it, even if he is the best pitcher in baseball. In the past, you would trade players and have teams outbid each other. This is not the case with Santana. The Twins want way too much for him. Team have outbid each other, on top of that, the Twins want more.

If you are the team acquiring Santana, your giving up players that you will have to replace via free agency. It's going to cost them more getting them than already having them. In Santana's case, they are going to have to give him a 7/150 million extension. You are investing too much in a player where he could put a strangle hold in the team's payroll for the next decade.

If a team trades for Santana at the current asking price they will regret it.

The teams that are in talks for a trade with Santana and the Twins, are asking that they get a few days to get a contract extension with Santana as well. If they dont get an extension done in those few days, the team wont trade for him. Both Boston and New York have asked for that.

As for giving up a number of prospects for 1 great player... if the player is right, It's definitely something teams should do.

This offseason alone has had some trades that I thought were wrong in giving up their young talent. The Astros gave up quite a bit to get Miguel Tejada. He's a very good player, and has proven to be consistent... but he's lost a lot of power and is getting old. I thought that they gave up too many good prospects to get him.

In the case of the Yankees and Johan Santana... I think they'd be making a pretty good move. The money isn't something they care much about, so scratch that. Hughes may turn out to be a great pitcher - who knows... but I would personally do a Hughes, Cabrera, and a few other good prospects for Santana. Looking back in 5 years or so, it might turn out that it was a bad move. But the future is never a sure thing, and how Hughes and those other prospects turn out isn't a sure thing either. Santana is a sure thing, atleast in the short term.

Santana is a great pitcher, but the thought of giving up 5-6 quality prospects or one star player and 3 prospects isn't worth it for most teams. I think the Twins will sign Santana to a new contract this off-season that would benefit other teams, then when the season starts and new talent emerges I think a trade will be made early in the season. I do not see Santana finishing the season in a Twins uniform.

It is worth it because your team immediately has a chance to contend for the playoffs and world series. Whereas for the young prospects, there is an adjustment period. And who is to say they will ever live up to their potential? With Santana you have a bonna fide #1 starter and two time Cy Young award winner. That's why teams are lined up to trade for him. He could be the missing link in any team's playoff run.

i think teams should wait because we know he will test the market the following year and his price will go up.if you get him and if he is too expensive for you to keep,he will be gone and you are out of prospects/players.if teams wait till he becomes a free agent they can bid for him and if you dont get him you will still have your prospects/players to build or offer for another good player.

to many players go to a team for a year and put on a ''smile'' and say they are enjoying their time when in their minds they are coming up with ''arm twisting'' ideas to get what they want .

thats my 2cent about santana's situation.

Um......yeah.....considering how much Zito and others are getting paid. Whoever gets Santana, is going to have to pay for him when they get him anyway. If he just wants to get paid, he'll just stay in Minnesota and wait. Whoever gets him, if he gets traded, will have a deal in place for him to get an extension, otherwise, he won't waive his No-trade clause, and he'll just wait until next winter to get more cash.

i say no , just wait until next year when he will be a free agent then take your chances there
