pain above left pectoral while taking a deep breath...?
My girlfriend is experiencing a sharp pain above her left pectoral muscle when she takes a deep breath. It started about an hour ago when she woke up and we were wondering what might be causing it. Overall she feels fine, but the pain is obviously annoying. Does anyone have any QUALIFIED answers as to what this may be? Please no wild guesses and directions to go to a doctor... we will address this if it persists. Thank You! She is 21 and in good health.
It is constant, but rarely ever happens.....it has just been for the last 2 hours at most and worse during really deep breaths.

I don't have qualified but I have same pain, I had MRI done and found a major bruise in my pectoral which will be there for 5-8 months, I would not worry about your heart unless your family has history of heart problems otherwise it's a waste of time but always good to make sure, It's probably just a bruise, not enough fluids (A Major Cause Of This Pain).
Hope That Helps!

Does she have a rapid pulse (over 100?)
Does she have rapid respiration (over 20 breaths per min?)
Does she have difficulty breathing?
Is she on birth control pills?
Is she a smoker?
These questions all have relevance to her diagnosis.
Can you reproduce the pain (eXACTLY the same pain) by pressing gently over the painful area? Is the painful area near where the breastbone meets the sternum? If the answer to both these questions is yes, then it might be costochondritis, an inflammation of the rib/cartilage area. This is a harmless condition improved by motrin.
If the breathing or pulse is abnormal, or if she is a smoker on birth control or had a recent long car or airplane trip, the possiblity expands to include a blood clot to the lung. This, as you can imagine, is something potentially very serious if not deadly. This condition requires blood thinners.
Other possibilites include pleuritis (inflammation of lung lining) or other non specific type pain. There is also a highly unlikely chance of pericarditis (inflammation around the heart) There is a practically zero chance of it being something like a heart attack.
I hope this assists you in your decision making.

pleurisy? does she have shortness of breath? Pleurisy is an inflammation of the pleural lining around the lung. Try taking Advil or Aleve(anti-inflammatories) to see if it helps or makes it go away.
Another thing that it could be is a pneumothorax. That is air inside the chest area possibly caused by a collapsed lung. These can happen for no reason and can occur during sleep or just after waking. Ask her to bend over at the waist and touch her toes, then stand back up straight. If she feels an odd shifting feeling, that is an indication of air in the thorax and she will need to see a doctor. While these are not life-threatening, they should be checked out.

I get this occasionally and I believe it's torn tissue around the muscle (or something like that). The pain usually lasts a few hours to as much as a few days. I haven't been to a doctor, but I've been told that by people that have had the same pain...and mine has never lasted longer then two days, so I never felt the need to go to the doctor about it.

Well, it could be a hairline-cracked rib, gas pain or a pulled muscle from lifting too much weight. Of course, being on the left side could indicate a heart problem but she's pretty young for that.
