Bark collars?

Has anyone ever used these (spray or shock kinds)? My dog *allegedly* barks a lot while I'm gone during the day and I'm considering this as a possible solution.

I don't have personal experience with them but I do know people who have tried them and the results were awful.

At first, the dog would bark, then be zapped by the collar causing the dog to yelp which again caused the shock, only to cause more yelping etc....

Once the dog was used to NOT barking, he became very, very skittish. It really changed his personality!

I know that in a previous question (if I'm not mistaken) you had asked something about your neighbors complaining and you didn't know how to prove it wasn't your dog, did you find out it was?

  • I personally haven't had much luck with them. When I tried the shock collar on Doc, it would keep him quiet while he was wearing it (although at first he would try to run away from it when he heard the warning beep), but had no long-term improvement (admittedly I didn't work very long with it).

I tried the citronella collar on Rainbow, her dewlaps were so thick that no matter how tight I made the collar and how much I streched the skin on her neck, she never set the collar off.

I do have a friend who had a Bull Terrier that had the same experience as This Mutt's Mine describes. The dog started SCREAMING as soon as she got the shock, and wouldn't stop. Ever tried to get a collar off a hysterical bullie?

That said, I would try collars and see how they work for you before going to more drastic measures like debarking.

My Lab used to "annoyance bark" and I bought a shock collar. It took him exactly one time to learn that if the collar was on, he shouldn't bark. I put it on him when I left and took it off when I got home - If he started up when I was home, all I had to do was show him the collar and he stopped.

They are VERY effective and not cruel.

I haven't used them, but I have heard that the spray ones are pretty ineffective. Once the dog realizes that all they have to do to not get sprayed is turn their head, it becomes pretty useless. I have heard that the shock ones work very well... they also have one that vibrates instead of shocking, but I have no idea if they work.

Before you get one, I recommend you get a small tape recorder and record your dog all day. No point in wasting the money if your neighbors are lying =)

the bark collers are just like the invisible fence collers that my dogs have. It does not hurt them at all in fact my dog doesnt even go out of her boundrys without it on anymore just because she learned not to after one shock and i think that would be the same with the bark coller

My neighbor had them for their two dogs, one dog learned from it, one only cut the barking down about 50%.

Small dogs, and the fit was not too good they said.

they work pretty well, i have one for my barkative dog, and she learns not to bark with it on, but shes so smart that when its off she knows she can bark, thats the only problem, its really not teaching them a lesson, i dont know it depends on the dog i guess, good luck!

I understand they are quite effective and have one on order for our 6 month old Basset who is VERY...umm..vocal! LOL!

However, we ordered one (From Foster's and Smith) that sprays him only if it also "feels" the bark, so he won't get accidently get sprayed from just a loud noise....

wel is anyone else in the house becuase then you could use the spray but i personally dont like the whole bark collars they just seem mean. you could also try taking your dog to one ofthose pet training thing at petco or petsmart to get him to stop barking
