Can I use a wireless router for a simple network between two computers without Internet?

I have a wireless router that is to share a Broadband Internet connection. Can't I just attach this to a desk top pc's Ethernet and attach to the router via a wireless laptop so that I can network the two computer together? I don't want to use the Internet just share printers and files.

Update:

The PC has XP and the laptop has Vista Home Premium.

Yes u can do this, i can give you step by step instructions if you tell me the o.s you are running.....

For xp: Go to start- settings- Network connections- lan properties, scroll down to TCP/IP and double click. Check "use the following ip adress" now run "cmd" then type "ipconfig /all" it will tell you everything you need to fill out the form(subnet mask, default gateway, dns servers...). Check "use the following dns servers" and fill in the appropriate ips based on you info in "ipconifig /all".

This will work, but the results are unpredictable without a dsl or cable line to sync to. Better is to get a Wireless access point, as this can connect to the LAN port on one machine and the wireless on the other. It eliminates any problems with incorrect dns information, etc that a router might introduce. Or fit a wireless card to the second machine and set up an ad hoc network.

yes its easy. just connect your router like you would normally, but you can have your modem off or not connected at all, or if you dont have a modem, then dont worry about it. connect your desktop with the printer attached to one of the ports on the router (not the internet port) from the ethernet port on your desktop, make sense?

as long as your router is configured and your laptop has wifi, then it can connect to the network and see all your shared files on your desktop, including printer, without being on the internet. you will have to install your printer on your laptop for it to work tho, but its easy, no connections. i'm sure you can figure it out.
