window on my 2002 chevy tracker?

Question

I have a 2002 chevy tracker. A couple days ago the drivers electric window will go all   the way down when  pushing the button to open it and will only go half way up  on it's own when closing it, and you need to pull it the rest the way to closed with  you hand. For a few weeks before it started doing this it was operating properly but made a squeeking noise. I do not think the motor has gone out yet on the window, but the dealer say  they want around $400 to fix it by replacing the motor. How many of the rest of  you  with trackers have had window trouble?Any of you mechanics out there ,what do you think it wrong with the window? Thanks

Sadly, it's probably the motor.

If you wait a little while (not pushing the window button) when it stops will it start going again when you push the button?  If that's the case than the thermal cut-off on the motor is kicking in and the motor probably needs to be replaced.

These motors are quite difficult to get to without the right tools and can be a real pain to replace.  $400 sounds a bit high, but I wouldn't expect any less than $250.

Now that I re-read your post, the estimate from the dealer is probably so high because it's a dealer, not a garage.  Take the car to a nice little garage to have it done, it'll cost less.

the plastic gear on the motor, its junk, get a rebuilt one for about 50 bucks, and a mait book at the parts store for about 13 bucks and change it. The hardest part is drilling 3 holes (3 dimples show you where and drop it out. use 1/4 extention and socket to unscrew it, the holes are going to be about 5/16 as to allow you to put socket through. the book will tell you all this, don't give your hard earned money away.

i could get the Impala if it has a three.8L engine. That engine is extremely sturdy and outfitted annoying. The transmissions on the different hand.... no longer too undesirable yet must be extra suitable, incredibly in the journey that your 3800 is supercharged (which Impala's weren't) larger, safer, nicer.
